LUCEO, a photographer owned and operated cooperative established with the goal of supporting the significant work of its six members, will be having their third group exhibition at 25CPW Gallery in New York City on Friday, January 13, 2012. Titled, ‘Greater Than The Sum‘, this one-night event invites the audience to collaborate by selecting and cutting an original piece of work from one 163-foot run of layered images. In doing so, the audience is integral in deciding the outcome of the final work.
‘Greater Than The Sum’ is a significant break from their past exhibitions and a challenge to the orthodoxy of the gallery model. Culled from a broad array of sources – from personal projects to commissioned works to family albums, the selected images reflect the deep connection between the personal and professional within their work. The curated body has been fused into layers of overlapping and interlocking imagery that runs the entire span of the gallery. “Collaboration is key to what we do, it’s what connects us, ” says member Daryl Peveto, “Inviting the audience to participate with us is a natural progression.”
LUCEO is offering 74 one-of-a-kind pieces available for purchase. Collectors will be invited to select and cut their chosen piece from the wall during the course of the evening. Collectors will take home their 24-inch cuts, which will be signed, authenticated, and editioned by LUCEO’s exhibiting photographers.
We interviewed LUCEO member Daryl Peveto about the show.
How did the idea for this exhibition come about?
‘LUCEO members meet in person at least twice a year to discuss larger business matters. During our last meeting in Charlottesville, VA at LOOK3 we began knocking around ideas for this show. We knew we wanted to something very different from our past two group exhibitions at 25CPW. We looked first at our audience, who we wanted to talk to, then how do we engage them beyond the individual images and finally at the core concepts that we are working towards as an organization, namely collaboration, connection and community.’
How did you go about layering the images? Was this done digitally?
‘The final 163 foot span was digitally composed by member Kevin German. We each submitted images digitally (with film being scanned) to member Matt Eich for curation. These selects went to Kevin to work into the piece that will hang for the show. Kevin and I worked to develop the concepts of combining the images, looking at the physicality of the space and how people will interact with the work. We really wanted to force the viewer to move around, to come close and move back; not to just move a long a linear path and be done.'
‘Painter Julian Schnabel has said (and I am paraphrasing), Once a work of art becomes familiar, it is all over. Kevin worked really hard to fuse these layers in a very sophisticated and beautiful way. To see it in person is like experiencing a symphony. It’s layers lead to new paths. Every time I look at the work I see new elements.’

Audience participation is a major factor in this exhibition, but you are also auctioning off the images online. If something sells online before the show, how does that effect the what happens during the opening?
‘Audience participation is key to this exhibition. Indeed, the audience will be the final arbiter of the work. What we are doing before the show (and on the night of) is not selling any images per se, but rather CUTS – a term we created for the show to mark your place in line to cut from the show. Here is how it works: 1) you purchase a CUT from the store. The numbers mark the order the CUTS will be made, so #1 is first, and so on. 2) on the night of the show, each person who purchased a CUT will be given a pair of scissors to cut up to 24″ of a section of the 163′ run that they most like. 3) We will then edition, authenticate and sign your print and wrap it for you to take home.’
How many photographers are included in this show, and how did the curator go about selecting the work? What were they looking for? ‘There are six photographers in the show, comprising the six members of LUCEO. Curation proved challenging for this concept as it really goes against the traditional gallery model. Though we have worked with curators for our past shows, for this one we did the work ourselves, with Matt Eich curating the larger body and Kevin German assembling the final work.
‘The larger message for the show is about collaboration, which fits well with how we created this show and is what the organization is built on. The sub-text is the personal nature with which we approach our own photography. Each of us feel photography is an extension of ourselves, whether it be family photos, assignment work or personal projects. We approach each in a similar way. So the individual work submitted by each photographer was their own interpretation of this idea.’
Is there any kind of theme to the show or is it all about the process and audience involvement?
‘Yes, as I mentioned above, the subtext looks at the very personal and intimate nature of our individual work and how it in woven into our lives. The larger message ties into our mission as a cooperative, that collaboration is essential. For art to exist, it needs an audience. We want to collaborate with them and make a connection. To connect out work with our audience, to connect our clients with their customer, and to connect all of us into a larger community.’
How did you go about printing the 163-foot run of layered images? What were some of the challenges you faced with this?
‘This was indeed a challenge on many levels. Past exhibitions have been printed with LUCEO partner David Wright or by printing companies we have worked with. Because of the complexities of printing a show like this we decided to buy an Epson large format printer and print the show ourselves. Members David Walter Banks and Matt Slaby spent two weeks working on the show. They are printed on Somerset Velvet for Epson, one of their 100% cotton fine art papers with K3 inks. When they were finished, Matt said that these are the finest prints we have ever shown as a group.’
